Hands-On Program for Legal Professionals
This hands-on workshop will move from Microsoft Word's essential formatting tools through the advanced features needed to create, repair, and manage complex legal documents. Participants should bring a laptop with the desktop version of Microsoft Word installed.
1:00-1:15 p.m. Welcome, Workshop Goals, and Setup
Get oriented, confirm software setup, and review the documents and exercises used during the workshop.
1:15-1:45 p.m. I. Understanding How Word Formats Documents
Learn how paragraph marks, nonprinting characters, and Word's diagnostic tools affect document formatting.
1:45-2:20 p.m. II. Paragraph Formatting Fundamentals
Work with spacing, indents, tabs, alignment, and page-break controls to create consistent legal documents.
2:20-3:00 p.m. III. Styles: The Foundation of Reliable Formatting
Use styles to improve consistency, simplify revisions, and organize long documents.
3:10-3:45 p.m. IV. Automatic Paragraph Numbering and Bullets
Create and repair reliable multilevel numbering and bullet schemes linked to styles.
3:45-4:20 p.m. V. Repairing and Rebuilding Problem Documents
Follow a practical process for cleaning up and rebuilding documents that are difficult to edit or control.
4:20-4:50 p.m. VI. Tools for Long and Complex Legal Documents
Use navigation, tables of contents, cross-references, footnotes, and tables of authorities more effectively.
4:50-5:00 p.m. VII. Final Document Check and Questions
Review key formatting, numbering, fields, and references before finalizing or filing a document.
Hands-on exercises and sample documents will be used throughout the workshop.
