DESCRIPTION

Keeping A.I. Honest: Reducing A.I. Hallucinations in Legal Research

Generative A.I. is fast, persuasive, and increasingly embedded in legal work. It can also produce answers that are polished, professional, and completely false. For lawyers trained to rely on authoritative language, this creates a unique risk: trusting output that sounds right but isn't. This program explains how and why A.I. "hallucinates," and why lawyers are especially vulnerable to being misled by confident, well-structured nonsense.

In this practical and engaging program, participants will learn how to:

  • Understand what A.I. hallucinations are and why they occur, using plain-English explanations tailored to legal work
  • Recognize the types of legal tasks and workflows where hallucinations most commonly arise
  • Identify red flags that signal when A.I. output may be incomplete, misleading, or fabricated
  • Craft clearer, more disciplined prompts that reduce hallucination risk and improve output quality
  • Test and verify A.I.-generated responses before relying on them in research, drafting, or client communications
  • Develop simple quality-control habits that allow lawyers to use A.I. confidently without outsourcing professional judgment

Speaker:

Sean Carter is a Harvard Law grad, who spent a decade practicing securities law before leaving the practice of law to pursue a career as the country's foremost Humorist at Law. Since then, Mr. Carter has crisscrossed the country delivering comedic professional educational seminars for more than 350 legal organizations in three dozen states. His presentation topics run the gamut from legal ethics to stress management to diversity. Yet, all of his presentations have one thing in common -- humor and plenty of it. In fact, in 2003, Mr. Carter was dubbed "America's Funniest Lawyer" by The Radio and Television Interview Report. Finally, Sean lives in Mesa, Arizona with his wife and four sons.
